Pole Reports from Space combines the sounds of the Polish Radio Experimental Studio with the flavor of the 80s soviet sciencefiction that used its music as a soundtrack. Two Polish dancers, Justyna Kalbarczyk and Krystyna Lama Szydlowska, enter a futuristic dreamscape inspired by this musical heritage. Like cosmonauts whirling through space, or perhaps like ghosts behind an opaque wall, they try desperately to communicate. Pole reports from space is an exercise in encoding and decoding their message, and an invitation for the audience to join. Movements and sounds that seem abstract slowly reveal their roots in the analog world. Texture and meaning collide.

Claire Croizé and Etienne Guilloteau’s choreography takes as much from the music of PRES as from its history, as a pioneering hub for electronic music, isolated behind the iron curtain and operating under the radar of communist censorship. They uncover a vision of the future as seen from the past, at once utopian and nostalgic. A vision built upon dreams of travelling into worlds beyond, but unable to foresee what would become of the world we live in. But if we would only listen, we might one day get the message.

This co-production with the Art Stations Foundation is a commission from Adam Mickiewicz Institute (IAM) as part of the multi-annual programme NIEPODLEGŁA 2017–2022.
