Stary Browar Nowy Taniec is a performative program of the Art Stations Foundation by Grażyna Kulczyk, run in Stary Browar, Poznań, Poland since October 2004. Its mission is to popularize, promote, and present the art of contemporary choreography to local audiences, and its main goal – following the motto ART DOESN’T NEED SUPPORT, ARTISTS DO! – is to intensively support the development of Polish dance makers and their search for individual language by establishing the first Polish regular dance space and choreographic development center – a meeting point for local and international dance communities and a platform of artistic dialogue, research, creation, and choreographic reflection.
Following the mission of the program, from the very beginning Stary Browar Nowy Taniec has supported Polish dance artists both in their creations and their individual artistic development, successfully introducing to the Polish scene a whole new generation of ambitious and talented dance creators. Since 2004, dozens of choreographic works have been created in collaboration and with production support from the Art Stations Foundation.
With the aim of supporting the development of choreographic skills, many research and educational programs for young professionals has been created with a flagship Alternative Dance Academy – a project that brings together international choreographers and Polish artists for series of intensive choreographic training and research sessions. Since 2015 foundation is also granting a research scholarship to support development of discourse around the art of contemporary choreography. Moreover, in 2011 the Foundation introduced the first regular dance program for children in Poland, composed of presentations of the best international performances and unique dance experiences within organized workshops, providing Polish artists with professional coaching in the craft of creating for the youngest audiences.
As an important part of its activities, the Art Stations Foundation/Stary Browar Nowy Taniec is very active in promoting Polish dance abroad, establishing artistic and educational relationships with international partners (such as European Dance House network and Aerowaves network a.o).
With its general interest in the art of choreography, favoring choreographic research and creative process over product, aiming to stir a discussion on ever broadening definitions of contemporary choreography and to support the development of the discourse around this dynamically growing art form, the Stary Browar Nowy Taniec program turns Stary Browar into a creation and reflection space where conscious, open-minded, and adventurous dance audience becomes a challenging partner for contemporary (not only young) choreographers – a very unique spot on the map of Polish dance.
